Beautiful, unique and sympathetic Menorquin gelding

🌟 This super handsome gelding is ready for his next step

This special gelding is ready for a new phase in his career. We bought him when he was one year old. After that, he stayed on Menorca for another year, where he could grow up in a natural environment. The terrain there plays an important role in developing strong hooves and tendons – a valuable foundation for the future.

Subsequently, he spent two years in the Netherlands with his buddy from Menorca, together with another Spanish gelding. During that period, he gained a lot of positive experiences: he went to the woods, walked along the main road, was lunged, learned the first basics of the Spanish walk, and has already worn a saddle. He is backed, but still needs further training. He doesn't make a single wrong step. He is also well-behaved in the horsebox: he walks up calmly and stands very quietly during transport.

In May 2024, he came to our home, where he was given the time to grow further – they are late bloomers after all. He runs in a group of nine horses (KWPN) and effortlessly found his place there from day one. He hangs out a lot with the lead mare, loves to play with the other geldings, and is remarkably sweet and cautious towards the foals.

He can live outdoors 24/7, but is also used to stabling at night. He is social, stable, and feels comfortable in a group.

We want him to find a nice, caring home where he can truly be someone's buddy. A place with good management and a calm, positive way of training.

The Menorquín

The Menorquín is a horse breed originating from the Balearic Island of Menorca in Spain.

Description

It is a proud baroque horse with a deep black coat and a rich, lush mane and tail growth. Foals are born bay and turn black later. Markings are not desired within the breed.

The breed is known for its elegant appearance, calm temperament, and obedient character. The horses possess supple, rhythmic gaits and combine grace with strength. In addition, they are frugal, robust, and can reach a high age – sometimes up to forty years.



Use

The Menorquín excels in High School dressage. During traditional religious processions on Menorca, they display their impressive skills in the streets, where they are admired by the crowd.

At the so-called Jaleo festivals, the horses often stand and walk on their hind legs for long periods. Due to their natural talent for these spectacular movements, including the courbette, they require an experienced and balanced rider.

On Menorca, a distinct form of classical horsemanship has even been developed: the Doma menorquina.



Breeding

For a long time, the Menorquín was considered a subtype of the Andalusian. The ancestors of these Iberian horses include the Barb, the Arabian, and the Lusitano. A related breed on Majorca is the Balearic pony (Caballo mallorquín).

In 1989, its own studbook was established under the name Caballo de Pura Raza Menorquina.

The breed currently numbers around 2,500 registered horses and shows a growing population. Menorquíns are exported on a limited scale, including to the Netherlands.
